Onyx Wall Panels

A Timeless Choice for Refined Interiors

Onyx wall panels are decorative stone cladding made from natural onyx, a translucent, banded stone prized for its distinctive layering, rich color variation, and ability to transmit light. Its semi-translucent quality makes it uniquely suited for backlit installations, producing a warm, luminous glow from within the stone that no opaque material can replicate.

Because no two slabs are identical, every installation is inherently one of a kind.

At Nova Tile and Stone, onyx slabs and panels are available for viewing at showroom locations in Reno, Sacramento, Minden, and Fernley.

What Makes Onyx Wall Panels Unique

While wall cladding is the most common application, onyx stone countertops are equally sought after, particularly for vanities, bar tops, and low-traffic accent surfaces where the stone's translucency and banding can be fully appreciated.

The stone used in architectural applications, wall panels, countertops, and decorative cladding, is a banded calcite material composed primarily of calcium carbonate (CaCO₃). It forms at or near the earth's surface from mineral-rich spring water or groundwater that slowly deposits layered calcite in caves, rock fissures, and natural voids. This process produces the characteristic parallel banding in colors that range from creamy white and honey gold to deep green, warm caramel, and near-black.

It is worth noting that architectural onyx differs from gemstone onyx, which is a chalcedony-based silicate. In the stone trade, the term "onyx" refers to this banded calcite variety, and it is this material that is used in wall panels and interior cladding.

As a calcite-based stone, it rates approximately 3 on the Mohs hardness scale, placing it in a similar range as marble. This moderate softness makes the surface susceptible to scratching and etching from acidic substances, which is why wall applications are far more suitable than high-traffic flooring or heavy-use countertop surfaces.

Design Applications

  • Bathroom Feature Walls and Shower Surrounds Popular in luxury bathrooms, onyx makes a striking focal point when installed as a full-height panel behind a freestanding bathtub, while backlit shower surrounds deliver a spa-like atmosphere. When properly sealed, the stone holds up well on shower walls. It is not recommended for shower floors, where constant foot traffic and water exposure would accelerate wear and etching.
  • Living Room Accent Walls A floor-to-ceiling feature wall in a living room or entryway immediately elevates the space. Due to the material's visual complexity and translucency, it is most effective as a single statement surface rather than covering multiple walls.
  • Fireplace Surrounds The stone pairs naturally with fireplaces. The warmth and light of a fire reflect through the translucent layers, creating a dynamic, shifting display.
  • Commercial and Hospitality Spaces Hotel lobbies, executive offices, and high-end restaurants use onyx wall panels to communicate luxury. A backlit reception desk or bar front creates an immediate and lasting visual impression.

Across all of these applications, one feature consistently elevates the material above other stone options: its remarkable response to light.

Backlit Onyx: Maximizing Stone's Natural Beauty

Backlighting is where this material truly sets itself apart. Installing LED lighting behind the panels allows light to filter through the stone, revealing its internal banding and color gradients in a way that transforms a wall into a glowing surface.

For effective backlighting, panels are typically cut to between 5mm and 10mm thick. At this range, the stone transmits light without compromising structural integrity. Composite-backed panels, where a thin layer is bonded to a glass or honeycomb support, can be produced at even thinner dimensions while maintaining stability. Standard wall cladding panels not intended for backlighting are generally supplied at 15mm to 20mm.

Because this is a calcite-based stone, any adhesives or backing materials used behind lighter-colored panels should be white or neutral to avoid shadowing through translucent sections.

Care and Maintenance

Like all natural stone, onyx wall panels reward consistent care with lasting beauty.

Sealing The stone is porous and must be sealed at installation using a penetrating impregnating sealer formulated for calcareous stones. It should be resealed every 6 to 12 months, depending on exposure and use. Panels in wet environments such as shower surrounds require resealing approximately every six months. A simple water bead test, placing a few drops on the surface and observing whether they absorb or bead up, can help determine when resealing is needed.

Cleaning Use only pH-neutral stone cleaners. As a calcite-based material, the surface reacts readily to acids, vinegar, lemon-based products, bleach, and abrasive pads will etch and dull the finish. A soft microfiber cloth with a stone-safe cleaner is sufficient for routine upkeep. Dry the surface after cleaning to prevent water spots and mineral buildup.

Avoiding Impact and Etching With a Mohs hardness of approximately 3, the surface scratches more easily than granite or quartzite, and its calcite composition makes it vulnerable to etching on contact with acidic substances. On wall applications, direct impact is rarely a concern, but care should be taken in areas where contact with hard or acidic materials is possible.

With proper care, onyx wall panels will retain their beauty for decades.

Transform Your Space

Few natural stones deliver the combination of warmth, translucency, and visual drama that onyx wall panels bring to an interior. Whether the goal is a glowing backlit feature wall, a refined bathroom surround, or a statement fireplace cladding, it has the capacity to redefine a space in a way that is both timeless and distinctive.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. The stone works well for bathroom walls and shower surrounds when properly sealed before installation and resealed every six months in wet environments. It is not recommended for shower floors, where constant foot contact and moisture exposure would accelerate surface wear and etching.

Standard wall cladding panels are typically 15mm to 20mm thick. For backlit installations, they are cut thinner, generally 5mm to 10mm, to allow adequate light transmission. Composite-backed panels bonded to glass or a honeycomb support can be produced at even thinner dimensions. A stone specialist can advise on the right thickness for your specific application.

No. As a calcite-based stone, the material is sensitive to acid rain, UV exposure, and thermal fluctuations, all of which can cause fading, surface etching, and structural deterioration over time. It is best suited for protected interior environments.

Both are calcite-based natural stones with similar hardness and care requirements. The key difference is translucency, onyx wall panels transmit light and can be backlit to produce a luminous, glowing effect that marble cannot replicate. For a dramatic, backlit installation, this material is the stronger choice. For broader color selection and wider application versatility, marble is the more practical option.

Nova Tile and Stone carries natural stone slabs at showroom locations in Reno, Sacramento, Minden, and Fernley. Visiting in person is strongly recommended, as the stone varies significantly from slab to slab in color, veining, and translucency. Our team can help match the right material to your project.
