Performance Specifications
Hardness
The stone ranks between 3 and 4 on the Mohs hardness scale, below granite (6–7) and quartzite (7), and is generally considered suitable for a wall-fixed vertical surface.
Porosity and Water Absorption
Marble is a moderately porous stone. On a vertical surface, direct liquid contact is limited, which tends to reduce staining risk. The primary concern in a kitchen setting is grease and oil splatter near the cooktop, managed with a penetrating sealer applied at installation.
Density
The density of natural stone ranges from 2.55 to 2.75 g/cm³. The stone carries meaningful weight at standard thicknesses, so the substrate and fixing system should be assessed before installation.
Slab Dimensions and Thickness
Standard pieces measure approximately 240–250 cm in length and 120–140 cm in width, though dimensions vary by quarry. For backsplash applications, 16 to 20 mm is the standard thickness range. Panels at 16 mm are lighter and suit depth-constrained installations, while 20 mm is preferred by many fabricators for standard residential and commercial work.
Available Finishes
Polished
A polished finish brings out strong color depth and veining contrast. It is smooth and easy to wipe clean, though etch marks tend to be more visible against the high gloss.
Honed
Honing produces a flat, matte surface where veining appears softer. It tends to be a practical choice for kitchen use because etch marks blend in and are less noticeable than on polished stone.
Leathered
Leathering creates a low-sheen surface with slight ridges that add tactile depth while preserving the stone's natural character. The texture can conceal fingerprints and smudges more effectively than polished or honed finishes, making it a considered choice for high-use kitchens.
Specialty Finishes
Brushed and sandblasted finishes are available for projects where a surface texture outside the three standard options is required.
