Honed Granite Countertops

Granite is an igneous rock formed through the cooling and solidification of magma, producing a dense, hard material known for its natural variation in color, mineral composition, and surface texture. When granite slabs are ground and refined to a smooth, matte surface without the final buffing stage used in polishing, the result is commonly known as honed granite countertops. The matte finish reduces surface reflectivity, giving the stone a softer, more understated appearance while preserving the natural character of the material beneath. Our team carries a curated selection of granite slabs finished to a matte surface, and you can browse our available inventory to find the right slab for your custom countertop project. The surface is built for lasting use, but still benefits from proper sealing, thoughtful care, and correct installation to maintain its appearance over time.

Our team has been helping homeowners, interior designers, and contractors find premium natural stone since 2005. With four showroom locations serving Nevada and Northern California, our team is available to help with slab selection for any custom countertop or kitchen island project.

Honed Granite Slabs for Custom Countertop Projects

Granite is one of the harder natural stones available for custom countertop projects, and the honed finish offers a distinct alternative to a polished surface by delivering a softer, more matte appearance. The finish is achieved by stopping the grinding process before the final buffing stage, which leaves the surface smooth to the touch but without the light-reflective quality of a polished slab. Our team sources granite slabs across a broad range of tones and mineral compositions, making this finish a versatile option for custom countertop projects in kitchens, islands, and other surfaces throughout the home.

For those also considering other matte finish stone options, our team carries honed marble countertop slabs and honed quartzite countertop slabs for comparison during the slab selection process. Each granite slab carries its own natural variation in mineral tone and texture, so viewing the actual stone in person or requesting samples is always encouraged before committing to a slab for your custom project. For additional guidance on how different stone finishes perform, the Natural Stone Institute offers a helpful overview of finish options and their characteristics.

Performance Characteristics

Honed granite countertops are well suited for daily use, but correct installation and ongoing maintenance are essential to long-term performance. Granite is generally known for good scratch resistance, but cutting directly on the surface is not recommended, and a cutting board should always be used to protect the finish. The matte surface of the stone can be more susceptible to showing oils and fingerprints compared to a polished finish, so prompt cleaning of spills and residue is particularly important. Honed granite can handle normal surface heat reasonably well, but direct contact with very hot items should be avoided.

Trivets and heat pads are recommended whenever placing hot cookware or pans on the surface, as thermal shock can still be a concern even with harder stones. Granite is UV resistant, which means the surface can hold up in spaces with significant natural light, though performance may vary by color and finish. The stone offers good moisture resistance, but standing water should not be left for long periods, particularly around seams and edges. Sealing is especially important for this finish, as the matte surface can be more porous than a polished slab and may require more frequent resealing depending on use.

Care and Maintenance

Keeping the stone in good condition over time comes down to consistent, appropriate care. Our team recommends the following:

  • Wipe up spills promptly, particularly oils and acidic liquids, as the matte finish can be more susceptible to staining than a polished surface.
  • Use a soft cloth or non-abrasive sponge for daily cleaning.
  • Avoid abrasive cleaners and harsh chemicals, as these can affect the matte finish of the surface over time.
  • Use a cutting board at all times. The surface offers good scratch resistance, but direct cutting is not recommended.
  • Place trivets or heat pads under hot pans and cookware to reduce the risk of thermal shock.
  • Seal the surface regularly as directed by your fabricator or installer, as this finish may require more frequent sealing than a polished surface, particularly in high-use areas or around sinks.
  • Standing water should not be left on the surface for extended periods, especially near edges and seams.
  • Inspect the surface periodically for areas that may need resealing, particularly around sinks and high-use zones, to help maintain the finish over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Honed granite slabs are a popular option for custom countertop projects because of the material's natural hardness and the softer, matte aesthetic the finish can deliver. The surface is well suited for high-use areas, but proper care will help preserve its appearance over time. Because the matte finish can show oils and fingerprints more readily than a polished surface, spills and residue should be cleaned promptly. Sealing the surface as recommended by your fabricator is also important for maintaining performance over time.

For day-to-day cleaning, a soft cloth or non-abrasive sponge with mild soap and warm water is generally sufficient. Abrasive cleaners and harsh chemicals should be avoided, as they can affect the finish over time. Spills should be wiped up promptly rather than left to sit, and the surface should be resealed periodically based on the fabricator's recommendations. For a full care guide, our team suggests reviewing the care resources available through the Natural Stone Institute.

Honed granite can be more porous than a polished granite surface, which means it may benefit from more frequent sealing depending on the application and level of use. Your fabricator is best positioned to recommend a sealing schedule based on the specific slab and how it will be used. Keeping up with sealing can help the surface maintain its appearance and resist staining over time.

Yes, store pickup is available at all four showroom locations. A properly rated truck and A-frame are required to safely transport natural stone slabs. Our team will assist with loading at the time of pickup. Scheduling an appointment in advance is recommended to ensure the slabs are ready upon arrival.

Yes, slab delivery is available. Natural stone slabs require special handling and are securely strapped to an A-frame and loaded onto a dedicated truck for transport. Delivery is made directly to a fabricator's address, and the receiving facility must have a forklift and slab boom or clamp available for unloading.
