ASTM C650 is a standard test method for determining the resistance of ceramic tile to specified chemical substances. The evaluation is a visual comparison between the exposed area and an unexposed reference section of the same tile. If there is no discernible change, the sample is recorded as not affected for that reagent. If the surface shows staining, etching, dulling, or any other visible reaction, it is recorded as affected. Samples that show no visible change also go through a follow-up check, where pencil lines are drawn across the exposed area and wiped with a damp cloth. If the marks wipe away cleanly, the surface is confirmed as not affected.

Results are classified separately for unglazed tile, using a U prefix, and glazed tile, using a G prefix, with each further split by concentration group and rated on a letter scale from A (no visible effect) down to C (significant visible damage). This produces classifications such as GA, GB, and GC for glazed tile tested against household chemicals, and similar labels for the other reagent groups and for unglazed tile.

ASTM C650 takes a simpler approach, reporting whether the specimen was affected or not affected by each reagent tested, rather than assigning one overall graded classification to the product. This makes ASTM C650 straightforward to interpret, although it offers less detail than the European system when comparing products tested with different reagents or concentrations.

When a manufacturer publishes ASTM C650 results, the report typically lists each reagent tested along with an affected or not affected result for that substance. Some manufacturers test a broader list that includes additional acids and alkalis intended for commercial or industrial use.

It helps to read past the summary line and check which specific substances were part of the test. Two tiles can both be marketed as chemical resistant, but one may have been tested against a short list of mild household products while the other was tested against a longer list that includes stronger reagents. For a residential kitchen or bathroom, testing against common household chemicals is usually sufficient. For a commercial kitchen, laboratory, or industrial washroom, a broader test list gives a clearer picture of how the tile will perform under daily conditions.

For a residential kitchen or bathroom, review whether the product was recorded as not affected by the household chemicals relevant to the intended use. For a commercial kitchen, laboratory, or other higher-exposure setting, it is worth confirming with the manufacturer which specific chemical classes were included in the test, since not every product on the market has been evaluated against the same reagent list.

Porcelain tile may be considered for chemically demanding spaces, but performance should not be inferred from the material name alone. Review the ASTM C650 results for the specific product and check the chemical resistance requirements of the grout, setting materials, and sealants separately.
