Taj Mahal Stone

Taj Mahal Stone, also widely known as Taj Mahal quartzite, is a premium natural quartzite quarried in the Ceará region of Brazil. Classified as a metamorphic rock, it forms when ancient sandstone undergoes millions of years of intense heat and pressure, producing a dense, crystalline surface rated 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs hardness scale.

Its creamy white to warm beige base, layered with delicate veining in gold, taupe, and pale gray, closely resembles marble but offers significantly superior durability. Every slab is unique. At Nova Tile and Stone, slabs are available for in-person selection in Reno and Minden, Sacramento and Fernley.

What Sets Taj Mahal Stone Apart From Other Natural Quartzites

Origin & Character

Similar Brazilian quartzites, Perla Venata and Perla Bianco share the same Ceará geology, yet the original Taj Mahal quarry produces slabs with a warmer ivory base and more pronounced gold veining.

Acid & Stain Resistance

Unlike marble, which scores 3 to 4 on the Mohs scale and etches under acidic spills, this quartzite resists lemon juice, wine, and coffee with far greater reliability.

Certifications

It is GreenGuard Gold Certified for low chemical emissions and NSF-certified safe for food preparation, credentials that matter for health-conscious homeowners and LEED-rated projects

Durability, Maintenance, and Performance You Can Count On

At 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale, Taj Mahal Stone outperforms soapstone and most granites in scratch and impact resistance. Its density allows it to withstand brief contact with warm cookware, though trivets are recommended to prevent thermal shock.

Routine care requires only a pH-neutral cleaner and soft cloth. Bleach, vinegar, and ammonia-based products break down the sealant and should be avoided. Resealing at least once a year is standard, and a simple water bead test reveals when protection needs refreshing.

Design Applications for Taj Mahal Stone in Kitchens, Baths, and Beyond

In kitchens, this stone works as a perimeter countertop, full-height backsplash, or waterfall island. In bathrooms, it transforms vanity tops, shower walls, and tub surrounds into spa-like spaces. It pairs well with white cabinetry, warm wood tones, matte black hardware, and brushed brass fixtures.

Designers also specify it for fireplace surrounds, flooring, and commercial accent walls. Slabs are available in 2 cm and 3 cm thicknesses, 3 cm preferred for countertops, 2 cm for vertical applications in polished, honed, and brushed or leathered finishes.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is natural quartzite, harder, denser, and more acid-resistant than marble, which scores 3 to 4 on the Mohs scale and etches easily in kitchen conditions.

Taj Mahal produces a warmer ivory base with more pronounced gold veining. Perla Venata reads lighter and less veined. Viewing both at a showroom is the best way to compare.

Yes. Reseal at least once a year. If water absorbs into the surface rather than beading up, apply a quality penetrating stone sealer.

Polished, honed, and brushed or leathered. Polished is most popular for kitchens. Honed offers a matte look. Brushed or leathered adds texture for islands and bar surfaces.

Three centimeters, approximately 1.25 inches is preferred for strength and eliminates the need for a plywood substrate. Two centimeters suits backsplashes and accent walls.
