Blue Pearl Granite

The Norwegian Granite That Changes Color With the Light

Quarried from the Larvik region of Norway, Blue Pearl granite has been extracted from the same Tvedalen quarry for over a century. The stone carries a dark blue-gray base layered with iridescent silver and blue crystals that shift in appearance depending on lighting and viewing angle. That optical effect, called labradorescence, comes from large anorthoclase feldspar crystals that make up approximately 80–85% of the stone's mineral composition. It is technically classified as a larvikite, a type of syenite, though the trade and design industries refer to it by its commercial name, Blue Pearl granite.

The color range across slabs tends toward blue-gray, with some pieces reading as a cooler silver-blue and others carrying a darker, more charcoal-toned background. That variation is a natural result of where in the quarry a given slab originates, making each piece distinct from the next. The shimmering quality of the crystals means the stone looks noticeably different under natural daylight versus interior lighting, which is worth keeping in mind when selecting a slab for a specific application.

Where Blue Pearl Granite Works Well

Blue Pearl granite sees use in both residential and commercial projects. Kitchen countertops are among the most common applications, and the stone holds up well in that context given its hardness rating of 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale and low porosity of approximately 0.18% by volume. Those physical properties translate to solid resistance to scratching, heat, and most everyday spills. Bathroom vanity tops, kitchen island surfaces, and bar tops are other popular residential uses. On a larger scale, the stone also appears in flooring, wall cladding, and exterior architectural installations. Browse our natural stone slab inventory to see what is currently available.

The color and reflective quality of Blue Pearl granite pair well with white and light gray cabinetry, where the contrast allows the stone's iridescence to show clearly. It also works in darker kitchen and bathroom schemes, where it blends into a more tonal, cohesive palette.

Finish Options

Blue Pearl granite is available in polished, honed, and leathered finishes. The polished finish is most common and brings out the full labradorescence of the feldspar crystals, creating the bright, reflective surface the stone is known for. A honed finish produces a matte surface with a softer, more understated look and reduces the intensity of the shimmering effect. A leathered finish adds a slight texture while retaining much of the stone's natural color depth. Each finish changes how the surface reads in a room, so viewing samples in person under actual lighting conditions is useful before making a final selection. Care and Maintenance

Because Blue Pearl granite is a natural stone, it requires periodic sealing to protect against staining. Sealing every 12 to 24 months is a reasonable baseline, though frequency can vary depending on use and the specific sealer applied. For daily cleaning, a soft cloth with warm water and a mild, pH-neutral cleaner is sufficient. Acidic cleaners, abrasive pads, and harsh chemical products should be avoided, as they can degrade the sealant and affect the stone surface over time. Wiping up spills promptly is good practice for any natural stone countertop.

Seeing Blue Pearl Granite Slabs in Person

Natural stone carries color and pattern variation that photographs and digital samples cannot fully convey. The labradorescence of Blue Pearl granite in particular changes with the light, which means seeing the material in a showroom setting gives a much more accurate impression of how a specific slab will look in a finished space. We offer free design consultations at four showroom locations. Our Reno showroom and Sacramento showroom serve the greater Nevada and Northern California markets, while our Minden showroom and Fernley showroom provide additional access points across the region.

Visiting in person also allows you to compare individual slabs side by side, and our local showroom network makes that easy across all four locations.

Frequently asked questions

Blue Pearl granite is a natural stone quarried in the Larvik region of Norway, specifically from quarries in Tvedalen. It is technically classified as a larvikite, a type of igneous rock composed primarily of anorthoclase feldspar. The stone is sold commercially under the name Blue Pearl granite and has been quarried from the same location for over 100 years.

The shimmering, color-shifting quality in Blue Pearl granite comes from large anorthoclase feldspar crystals within the stone. These crystals produce a phenomenon called labradorescence, where the polished surface reflects light differently depending on the viewing angle and lighting conditions. The effect gives the stone a silver-blue to gray-blue appearance that shifts as light changes.

Blue Pearl granite rates 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, placing it among the harder natural stones used in residential and commercial applications. It has low porosity at approximately 0.18% by volume, which contributes to its resistance to staining when properly sealed. These characteristics make it a practical choice for kitchen countertops, bathroom vanities, and other surfaces that see regular use.

Sealing every 12 to 24 months is the general recommendation for Blue Pearl granite, though actual frequency depends on how heavily the surface is used and the type of sealer applied. A simple water test can help determine whether resealing is needed: if water no longer beads on the surface and instead absorbs into the stone, it is time to reseal.

Blue Pearl granite is available in polished, honed, and leathered finishes. The polished finish produces the brightest, most reflective surface and fully showcases the stone's iridescent crystals. A honed finish delivers a matte look with reduced reflectivity. A leathered finish adds light texture while retaining the stone's natural color. Viewing samples of each finish in person is the most reliable way to assess how they will look in your specific space.
